Change in Leadership: Part 1

What is the one guarantee in leadership?

leader is undoubtedly going to experience change in some way. There are going to be times when things must change to improve sales, to build a stronger core, or to recover from losses. Either he will initiate it or others will, but it is going to happen. In all reality it is important that the leader is the one who is implementing the change, not the employees or followers, in order that things will become better. Max Depree said, ‘In the end, it is important to remember that we cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.’ Since change is inevitable in order that there is a better outcome, then leaders need to seek how to implement positive change, rather than negative change. Negative change could cost the leader his leadership and possibly the organization its existence.

A leader in trouble is marked by his or her unwillingness to change. These leaders will not change even if it means a strongeroutlook on him personally and the business. These leaders deal with trouble spots in their leadership. According to John Maxwellthese include: “fighting change, staying inflexible, not taking a risk, insecure and defensive, has personal problems, and the list goes on.” A leader in trouble is more times than not why the organization will fail, just like Blockbuster, who in 2004 had 9,000 stores and now only has 51. Their leaders would not accept the digital advancements and they are now no longer a leader in video entertainment.

A leader must promote and encourage change in order to bring it about. Once a leader has determined that change must occur and what that change needs to be, it is up to him or her to see that it happens. The leader must look at all aspects of the change, such as him or her personally, the employees, and the specific thing being changed in order that this change is done in the most exemplary way. Change is going to occur. The leader must be ready to be the one who is positively promoting it.

Change is sometimes hard and sometimes easy, but I hope this discussion has given each of you reading this blog a desire to be an initiator of positive change. May you each be blessed in your faithfamily, and business. God Bless!!!
